In Mathematics students are encouraged to develop their understanding through a wide variety of experiences. Alongside the theory of mathematical concepts, students apply their techniques to realistic situations in order to achieve a balance between the abstract and reality. The department has its own ICT facilities, including interactive whiteboards and 31 laptops. The faculty subscribes to a number of electronic resources to enhance the learning of the students, and is actively updating the school's Virtual Learning Environment to offer further support. Resources available include interactive tutorials which specifically support the courses that our students follow, websites that help students to enhance their skills. Students throughout the school are entered for the UKMT Mathematics Challenge and students are selected to take part in the Team challenges.

Key Stage 3

In Year 7 we teach the students in mixed ability groups until half term and then set the students. Years 8 & 9 are set. The course in Key stage 3 is linked to the National Numeracy Strategy with embedded thinking skills and enrichment activities. Assessments are set half termly. Results are used to determine any set changes that may take place. Homework is set on a weekly basis

Key Stage 4

In Years 10 & 11 students are prepared for the Edexcel Linear GCSE. The majority of students take the examination at the end of Y11. Intervention sessions are available to those students requiring extra support. Students follow a unitised course with an assessment at the end of each.

Key Stage 5

Students follow a combination of Core and additional modules which lead to A level and Further A level in mathematics. Teaching groups are small so every student has personal attention as required.
